Build transcription into the research plan
Decide the editing level, anonymisation rules, security route, budget and delivery stages while preparing ethics and participant documents. A small pilot transcript can expose unclear instructions before a large dataset is recorded.
Quality begins at capture
Test every microphone, limit overlapping speech and retain original files. Online participants should use headsets where possible. Supply names, abbreviations and technical terms with the order, but keep confidential identifiers separate where the project requires it.
When text is needed during the event
Live reporting can support hearings, research sessions, consultations and accessible events. The right choice depends on whether viewers need key notes, near-live text or an exact checked record after the session.
