Live captions and checked transcripts made interactive online teaching accessible to students with profound hearing loss.
The requirement
BPP Learning Support needed students to follow live online lectures, participate in discussion and receive an accurate written record afterwards. The learners, lecturer and transcriber were all in different locations.
The challenge
A conventional transcript delivered after the webinar would not allow the students to take part as the teaching happened. The service therefore needed dependable scheduling, a live text route and a second process for producing a fully reviewed document.
Our response
The project team obtained the full webinar timetable and access details in advance. A principal transcriber and a backup were assigned for continuity. Screen-sharing software displayed the transcriber’s live text beside the webinar on each student’s computer, while a separate authorised recording provided the source for a carefully checked Word transcript after the session.
The outcome
After testing and resolving early connection issues, the arrangement enabled the students to engage in real time. Final transcripts were normally supplied later the same day, or early the next morning after evening lectures. The support continued until the students completed their courses.
